Florida is basically on a large peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida. It extends towards the northwest into a panhandle, extending along the northern Gulf of Mexico. The climate of Florida is tempered by its proximity to the large bodies of water which surround it. Most of the state has a humid subtropical climate, except for the southern part below Lake Okeechobee which has a true tropical climate. As a service to our current and past customers we maintain this grouping of travel related information for the State of Florida.
Tourism makes up the largest sector of the state economy. Warm weather and hundreds of miles of beaches attract about 60 million visitors to Florida every year. Amusement parks, especially in the Orlando area, make up a significant portion of tourism; the massive Walt Disney World Resort consists of four theme parks and more than 25 hotels in Lake Buena Vista, and together with Universal Orlando Resort, Busch Gardens, SeaWorld, and other major parks drives Florida state tourism. Of course, many beach towns are also popular tourist destinations.
